EU Commission Calls for Market-Wide Cloud Strategy

17.07.2012 by ruthplater

Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, wants the European market to make better use of cloud computing and has called for an EU-wide cloud strategy. Kroes warned that creating national rather than European cloud strategies would hinder economical growth.

‘The benefits of the Cloud come from its economies of scale. As do the benefits of our Single Market. If we think small we won’t get them. If we take a national approach, content ourselves with small clouds stuck in small markets, if we lock data within old borders, then we are limiting our cloud ambition,’ Kroes said at the Economic Council Symposium ‘Cloud-Computing – Between Growth Opportunities and Privacy’ in Brussels, Belgium.

24.04.2012 by ruthplater

Commentary by Bernd Becker, Chairman of EuroCloud Deutschland_eco e.V.

The civil rights activist of FoeBud gave one of their popular Big Brother Awards to the Cloud industry. This anti-award warns of ‘abusive uses of technology and information’ and is presented annually. The Big Brother jury said that ‘the Cloud’ signified a ‘trend that deprives users of control over their own data. (…) This is a glaring violation of the fundamental right to the confidentiality and integrity of IT systems, a right that was introduced into German law by the Federal Constitutional Court in 2008.’
